The electro-punk duo from Detroit ADULT. have returned with a new single after a two year hiatus. In anticipation of their new album Kissing Luck Goodbye, artists Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller dropped their first single, entitled “No One is Coming.” ADULT.’s detached tone and raw rhythms have made for success in the electronic genre, and this single is a perfectly fine addition to their stacked repertoire.
The song is not a complete departure from their other work, and features a lot of landmarks of ADULT. and other electronic artists from the late 90s and early 2000s; spattering synths, a minimalistic beat, and lyrics that sound like robotic incantations, like Kathleen Hanna taking on The Rapture. Kuperus’ gothic enunciations that “No one is coming” catchily reverberates against Miller’s glitchy, modulated loops. It’s coarse as it builds up to a hollering climax, when Miller cuts playfully drops the song, before the drums and screeching keys loop over and over again.
For a band that once described themselves as not fitting into the indie/alternative scene, the song helps contextualize the popular electronic music being released currently: think NEW YORK, Club Eat/Ren G, and Suzy Sheer. For better or for worse, the revival of electroclash has pervaded the music scene within the last couple of years, without really looking back at how the space for this genre was carved out. ADULT. reminds audiences that they’re not descendents, but the real thing. The song is not revolutionary by any means, but serves as a nice refresher in the genre and at the very least teases a promising upcoming album.
